AI models, often large language models, that are capable of competently performing a wide range of distinct tasks and are typically trained on vast amounts of data. These models can form the basis of AI systems but are distinct from them.

These are AI models capable of performing a wide range of distinct tasks, often used as a basis for other AI systems. The Act introduces rules on transparency and copyright for all GPAI models, with additional, more stringent requirements for those identified as posing systemic risks.
