Generative AI (GAI)

Class of AI models that emulate input data to generate synthetic content like images, videos, audio, and text.

Definition

Defined by Executive Order 14110 as 'the class of AI models that emulate the structure and characteristics of input data in order to generate derived synthetic content. This can include images, videos, audio, text, and other digital content'. The profile further clarifies that while not all GAI is based in foundation models, for its purposes, GAI generally refers to generative dual-use foundation models, which are trained on broad data, typically use self-supervision, contain numerous parameters, and are applicable across various contexts.
