Meaningful human oversight

Human involvement in the design, deployment and operation of AI systems that is appropriate to the level of risk, enabling human intervention, review or override where necessary to prevent harm, ensure accountability and uphold rights.

Human control, intervention or review mechanisms that enable persons to understand, influence, or override AI system outputs in a manner proportionate to the assessed risk; includes defined roles, escalation paths, operational procedures and training to ensure effective human accountability.

A requirement that humans retain appropriate levels of awareness, control and ability to intervene in AI system operation to prevent, detect or mitigate harm; it encompasses human review, escalation paths, decision‑making thresholds and documented procedures ensuring accountability and safety in automated or semi‑automated processes.
