Definition
A National Competent Authority is the government body designated by each EU Member State to be responsible for implementing and enforcing the EU AI Act within its jurisdiction. Each Member State must designate at least one notifying authority and one market surveillance authority.
National competent authorities are responsible for: designating and monitoring notified bodies, conducting market surveillance, investigating complaints, taking enforcement actions, establishing regulatory sandboxes, and cooperating with authorities in other Member States and with the AI Office.
These authorities serve as the primary point of contact for providers and users of AI systems within their jurisdiction and play a crucial role in ensuring consistent application of the AI Act across the EU.
