Court of Justice of the European Union — Czech police biometric & genetic data (C-57/23)
November 20, 2025 · Czech Republic · Law enforcement
In Policejní prezidium (Case C-57/23), the Court of Justice of the EU ruled on the collection and storage of biometric and genetic data by Czech police under the Law Enforcement Directive (EU) 2016/680. It held that processing such special-category data must be strictly necessary and subject to data-minimisation, storage-limitation and periodic-review safeguards, and that a general power to collect the data of anyone suspected of an intentional offence is insufficient.
