AI Procurement

Process and policies for acquiring AI systems with appropriate risk controls and governance.

Definition

AI Procurement refers to the processes, policies, and controls governing the acquisition of AI systems and services. Effective AI procurement addresses unique risks not present in traditional technology procurement:

  • Requirements definition: Specifying AI performance, fairness, and explainability needs
  • Vendor evaluation: Assessing AI-specific capabilities and practices
  • Risk assessment: Evaluating AI risks before acquisition
  • Contract negotiation: AI-specific terms (see AI contractual provisions)
  • Testing and validation: Verifying AI performance before deployment

Government AI procurement is subject to additional requirements, including OMB guidance (M-24-10) requiring federal agencies to implement AI governance before procurement.
