High-performance computing (HPC)

Advanced computational infrastructure supporting AI research and deployment.

Definitions (3)

Advanced computational infrastructure comprising powerful compute clusters, storage, and networking capabilities that enable large-scale AI research, model training, and deployment. The strategy specifically targets a substantial expansion of HPC capacity and regional HPC sites to support distributed access.

HPC denotes the national high-capacity computational infrastructure and hubs intended to support advanced research, industrial simulations and data‑intensive workloads. The Plan treats HPC as a strategic resource to be expanded and connected to EU capacities for pilots, research and commercial uptake.

HPC denotes the use of supercomputers and parallel processing techniques to solve complex computational problems. Emilia-Romagna, through CINECA, boasts significant HPC capabilities, including the Leonardo supercomputer, which is a core asset for the Hub's activities in AI development and data processing.
